Lia’s plan, at school and at home

How a school team turns an individual education plan into daily, picture-based steps, and keeps Lia’s parents part of it.

This person and story are fictional. The screens are from the TailorPath app with sample data, so names and details on them differ from the story.

Meet Lia, 8

A second-grader in a small special-education class, with a language delay. She loves drawing and finds it hard to wait her turn and to ask for help in words.

Goals they set together

  • Take turns in a game with a friend
  • Ask for help in words, not by leaving the room
  • Get ready for school using a picture schedule

The plan, step by step

  1. Step 1The school team

From the folder to the app

The teacher, speech therapist and occupational therapist build Lia’s plan from the school’s template, so everyone works from the same goals.

  2. Step 2The school team

    Goals that can be measured

Each goal gets five levels, from −2 to +2. “Takes turns” becomes clear: with an adult prompting, with a friend, or on her own.

  3. Step 3Lia

    Her missions for today

Lia sees her day as big, colorful tiles. Today’s mission: a turn-taking game with a friend. She taps End when she is done.

  4. Step 4Lia

    A companion she chose

Lia picked a friendly companion face. It reads her missions aloud and answers simple questions from her plan, and says it is an AI.

  5. Step 5Her parents

    Practice at home too

Her parents see the home missions, like the morning picture schedule, and fill in a short questionnaire every two weeks.

  6. Step 6The school team

    The team meeting

At the monthly team meeting, they look at Lia’s goals and missions together, instead of collecting updates from each person.

At the end of term

In this story, Lia takes turns with a friend when an adult is nearby and uses her picture schedule most mornings. Next term, the goal is waiting her turn in a group of four.
